ARISS Status - 21 March 2005  1. Successful Contact with Mt. Gambier, Australia School  On March 17, students from St. Martins Lutheran College in Mt Gambier, Australia, experienced a successful contact with Leroy Chiao, KE5BRW, via the telebridge station, WH6PN, in Hawaii. Ten students were able to ask twenty questions as an audience of two hundred parents, students and the South East Radio Group packed into the school's music room. The audio was streamed over the internet, courtesy of MCI, and also over EchoLink, and IRLP. The event was covered by WIN TV, Bush Vision, a new community TV station, the ABC radio network, The Border Watch newspaper, and the Wireless Institute of Australia (WIA).  The ABC South East SA story on the contact, "Students link up with the International Space Station," can be found at:  <http://www.abc.net.au/southeastsa/stories/s1326932.htm> A write up by Tony Hutchison, VK5ZAI, ARISS mentor for the contact, can be found on the WIA website. See: <http://www.wia.org.au/news/2005/20050318-01.php>  2. Upcoming School Contact The Science Discovery Center in Denton, Texas has been approved for an ARISS contact. It has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 29 at 16:38 UTC.   3. ARRL Article on Rains High School Contact  On March 8, students from Rains High School in Emory, Texas spoke with the ISS via amateur radio. Approximately 60 students, teachers and administrators attended the contact. A television station covered the event, and the teacher who coordinated the contact was interviewed by a local radio station. The ARRL ran an article on the event. To view "Students' Space Questions via Ham Radio Show Strong Science Slant," see: <http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2005/03/15/3/?nc=1>  4. ARISS International Meeting Held The monthly ARISS International Teleconference was held on Tuesday, 15 March 2005. Agenda items covered included an update on the ARISS U.S. school backlog and how to handle it, and the status of the Columbus Module. SuitSat was also discussed. The next ARISS International Teleconference will be held on April 19, 2005.  5. Energia News  Energia ran articles covering the training of the Expedition 11 crew, Roberto Vittori's taxi flight, and the SuitSat project. Some photos of the SuitSat mockup are included .

AO-7 AMSAT OSCAR 7

Status: Semi-operational in sunlight.

Return to active status: June 21,2002

Emily, W0EEC has created a website to allow the users of AO-7 to record

contacts, observations and use of the satellite more effectively at:

http://www.emilyshouse.com/experthams/ao7/main.php

This includes the ability to log contacts.

Mostly in mode B, ! with dx stations heard regularly, with some qrm on the 2m down link. But still plenty of traffic, showing that the old mode b transponder is  much liked and rated.

SO-50 SAUDISAT-1C

Status: Operational.

Uplink: 145.850 MHz

There have been unconfirmed reports on the amsat-bb emailer that So-50 has

shifted downlink frequency as much as 5khz up.

To switch the transmitter on, you need to send a CTCSS tone of 74.4 Hz.and then ctcss of 67hz to keep the bird open:its nice to see a bit more traffic on this bird this month.!

UO-11 OSCAR-11

Status: Semi-operational.

OSCAR-11 21st BIRTHDAY REPORT 10 March 2005 OSCAR-11 achieved 21 years in orbit on 01 March 2005. It's still working and sending reliable telemetry on it's VHF beacon. Congratulations to Professor Sir Martin Sweeting G3YJO and his team for this fine achievement. During the period 15 February to 09 March 2005 reliable signals have been received from the 145.826 MHz. beacon, transmitting continuous ASCII telemetry from 25 February to 06 March. At times signals have been weaker than usual, and subject to local interference (QRN), which has been stronger than usual. The beacon operates under control of the watchdog timer. Observations have indicated that the cycle is approximately 10.3 days ON followed by 10.4 days OFF. Assuming that this cycle continues, the beacon should switch ON around 17 March. The internal temperatures have decreased by about five degrees C. They are now 14C, 13C and 20C for the battery, telemetry electronics and command decoder respectively. At the present time the satellite is in full sunlight, and therefore temperature changes are caused by changes in attitude, and spin rate. The hot external surfaces will cause some nearby internal parts to warm up faster than others. A Solar eclipse predictions indicate that the continuous sunlight will continue until the end of April, when eclipses will start. The battery voltage has varied between 11.7 and 13.7 volts. The average voltage was 12.4 volts, unchanged since the last report. Low battery voltage have occurred when the internal temperatures were depressed. The period of rotation about the Z axis had been determined from the solar array currents. Values of between 431 and 590 seconds have been observed. Users of OSCAR-11 should note that the date in the telemetry is now advanced by FOUR days. The time is advanced by 20.6 minutes, and this error is increasing by about one minute per year. OSCAR-11 now operates in a default mode, controlled by the watch-dog timer. The satellite transmits continuous ASCII telemetry for approximately 10.3 days on 145.826 MHz., followed by 10.4 days of silence. This regular sequence might be interrupted by ground control, at any time. At the present time the mode-S beacon 2401.5 MHz. and the UHF beacon 453.025 MHz. are both OFF.
