How Do I Search the Index?

Simply type a query - the word or words you want to find - in the Search word(s) box, then use the Submit button to start the search. If successful, a list of pages that match your query will be displayed. A simple query consists of just one word, but you can also create queries which:

• Search for pages containing all words with the same beginning - e.g. Mare will find all pages which contain MAREX, Mares, etc.

• Search for pages that contain two or more words - e.g. Phase 3D orbit will find all pages containing those three words in any order. Warning: this method will find every page that includes the words phase, 3D, and orbit so care is needed in picking phrases when the Match option is set to "All", the default.

• Search for pages that contain any one of a list of words - e.g. digital rudak. With the Match option set to "Any", and then all pages referring to either word will be found.

• Search for two or more terms combined using AND/OR/NOT Boolean logic - e.g. cat not dog or (phase and 3D) NOT orbit. The Match option must be set to "Boolean".

The search is case-insensitive, so identical results will be found for a search on "Phase", "phase" or "PHASE".

Displaying the Results of Your Search

The Format option allows you to control how much information is returned. By default only the page titles are shown, but if you select the "Long" option then excerpts from the page, showing the search word(s) in context, are also displayed.

The search facility gives each page a "score" of between one and five. By default the highest scoring pages are listed first. However, you can chose, using the Sort by option, to sort by the age of the page, or in alphabetical order of their titles.
